Lewis commanded the Reval squadron that joined the Kronstadt fleet in the capture of Memel in July 1757, but with the arrival of the British fleet in the Baltic, requested and was granted permission to reside in Memel until the conflict between Russia and England was resolved. However, on the accession of Catherine II, Lewis was made a full admiral and reccieved the order of Alexander Nevskii.
At the beginning of 1764 he retired on full pension after fifty years in Russian service and continued to live in St. Peterburg until his death in March 1769. In the 1740s Lewis had been successivelycommander at Archangel, Kronstadt and Reval. In 1743 he had been in command of the White Sea squadron which left Archangel in an attempt to join the Russian fleet moving against the Swedes, but the ships were dispersed in a storm. Lewis was court-martialled but acquitted.

Earlier, under Anna Ivanovna, he had been dismissed from the service and exiled from Russia “for not more than two days” for daring to petition personally the empress for the restitution of pay but was soon pardonned and restored to his former post. Ho was in fact generallv regarded with favour and given special responsibilities, be it the safe conduct back to Kiel in 1727 of the newly-wed Duke and Duchess of Holstein (she was Peter’s daughter Anna), or, of more significance in the present context, the task of recruiting master shipbuilders and assistants inHolland and England in 1733.
