- To understand how Roy fits into Ernst zu Reventlow's final years, it helps to know why an American was in Germany at all. Roy had been raised by his German-born grandmother, who brought him back to Germany in 1936; the family had made some money in America and saw an opportunity for a better life there. So Roy was not a wartime visitor from abroad; he had been living in Germany from 1936 onward and simply happened to be there when war broke out in 1939.
During the war, he worked as an English-language radio announcer in Berlin from 1942 to 1943. He married Gabriele in Munich on November 5, 1942—almost exactly a year before Ernst passed away in November 1943.
